The Story
Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike is Christopher Durang’s wickedly funny play about family, regret, hope, and the choices we make in life. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. When their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike, old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. One night out at a costume party with Snow White, an evil queen, and a few dwarves can steer everything into perspective. Throw in a sassy maid who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress and you have all of the ingredients for a hilarious night at the theatre. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award® for Best Play and of the 2013 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Play.

Sonia - Female, 45-60, Vanya’s adopted sister, living with him in Bucks County; discontent, upset, regretful, and kind.
Masha - Female, 45-60, Vanya and Sonia’s sister; glamorous & successful movie star.
Spike - Male, 25-30, Masha’s new lover; sexy, well-built, self-absorbed, but otherwise outgoing & friendly. Must be comfortable performing shirtless in your underwear.
Nina - Female, 20-30, lovely, sincere, would-be actress, visiting her aunt & uncle next door; start-struck, earnest & energetic.
Cassandra - Female, 30+, cleaning lady & soothsayer; Metaphysical practitioner.

How to PrepareAuditioners are asked to prepare a one-minute comedic monologue, preferably from contemporary theatre repertoire or a Chekhov play. Actors may be asked to read from the script.

"Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike" will be directed by Jonathan Verge for Theatre UP. The show will rehearse & perform at the Littleton Opera House. Rehearsals begin December 11th and will take place most Wednesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Performance dates are February 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 & 16. Cast members are required to be at all rehearsals, excluding conflicts previously noted at auditions.
